Maggie

Viola 2020

Submitted by ceh822 on

Join us on Wednesday, March 4th at 5:30 in Ramsey Hall for Maggie Snyder's exciting faculty recital.

The upcoming March 4, 2020 faculty recital will feature 3 premieres of new music written for viola alone and for viola and piano, including the winning composition of the VIOLA2020 Call for Scores. VIOLA2020 is a year-long commissioning project celebrating the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

The winning piece by Kirsten Volness is called for "Hypatia" and will receive its world premiere performance on this concert. Having collaborated on numerous occasions in both recital and chamber music, Maggie will be joined by David Fung on piano for two of the selections on the recital. The first is a piece written for Maggie by former UGA composition professor Leonard (Chic) Ball Jr. in 2015. Maggie recorded the piece by Chic titled "within ~ without" which was released by PARMA records just days after the passing of Chic after a brief illness in December 2019. Despite her recording this piece, this performance will be the World Premiere performance of the work.

The concert also features the Eastern US Premiere of a piece titled "Elegy" for solo viola by amateur Athens-based composer and lawyer Barbara Redman. The program will finish with a performance of Brahms's "Sonata in F Minor Op. 120, No. 1" for Viola and Piano. The concert is free and open to the public and will be live-streamed.
