  • One aria from the Baroque or Classical era including a recitative
  • One Romantic or 20th/21st-century aria
  • Three art songs
  • An additional (unrestricted) selection. Non-Western classical styles are welcome.

Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice

DMA applicants must prepare eight (8) memorized selections, to include:

  • One aria from the Baroque or Classical era including a recitative
  • One Romantic aria
  • One 20th/21st-century aria
  • Four art songs OR three art songs and an additional aria
  • An additional (unrestricted) selection. Non-Western classical styles are welcome.

At least four languages, including English, must be represented. All repertoire should be sung in the original language. One aria should be from an oratorio. We encourage applicants to include music of underrepresented composers, as well as music composed in the past 25 years.

Applicants for the DMA should submit a writing sample that demonstrates the applicant's ability to write analytically and formally about music—including discussion of such issues as style, form, performance practice, and/or other musicological topics. A paper that was completed during the candidate's MM degree or within another academic program would suffice. The writing sample should be 5–10 pages in length.

Assistantships

All applicants are automatically considered for TAs. All voice types will be accepted, but tenors are particularly encouraged to apply.
