Undergraduate Brass Auditions

Student with tuba

Trumpet

  • 2 contrasting solos of your choice from the standard trumpet repertoire
  • Either a characteristic study by Arban or a Bousquet Etude of your choice
  • Major scales and sight reading.

Horn

  • Two solo movements of moderate difficulty and contrasting styles 
  • One etude which displays the performer's ability in legato and marcato styles 
  • From memory, six chromatically adjacent major scales and the chromatic scale performed at the tempo and range reflective of the performer's ability 
  • Sight-reading at a moderately difficult level

Euphonium

  • Be prepared to play any two-octave major scale and be able to demonstrate the upper and lower extremities of your range 
  • Choose one etude from each group:
    ◦  Rochut - Melodius Etudes for Trombone, Vol. 1: #4, #23, or #19  
    ◦  Voxman - Selected Studies for Baritone: A-flat Major Allegro, F Major Allegro, C Minor Allegro  
  • Select one of the following solos:
    ◦  Barat - Andante and Allegro  
    ◦  Capuzzi - Andante and Rondo   
    ◦  Curnow - Rhapsody for Euphonium   
    ◦  Guilmant - Morceau Symphonique  
    ◦  Marcello - Sonata in F Major    
    ◦  Mozart - Bassoon Concerto, movements 2 and 3

Tenor trombone

  • Choose at least one of the following etudes:
    • Bordogni:  Complete Vocalises  (#2-16)
    • Blazhevich: Clef Studies (#41-60)
    • Tyrell: 40 Progressive Studies (#1-15)
    • Voxman: Selected Studies (any)
  • Choose one of the following solos:
    • Barat: Andante & Allegro
    • David: Concertino
    • Galliard: Sonatas #1, 3, or 5
    • Guilmant: Morceau Symphonique
    • Jacob: Concerto
    • Larsson: Concertino
    • Saint-Saens: Cavatine
    • Sulek: Sonata vox Gabrieli
    • Telemann: Sonata in f minor
  • From memory, all major scales and arpeggios (2 octaves) and chromatic scale (2 octaves)

Bass trombone

    • Blazhevich: Low Range Studies (#12-25)
    • Grigoriev: 24 Studies (#2-20)
    • Maenz: 12 Studies (any)
  • Choose one of the following solos:
    • Capuzzi: Andante & Rondo
    • Handel: Sonata in F Major (arr. Yeo)
    • Haddad: Suite for Tuba
    • Hindemith: Three Easy Pieces
    • Lebedev: Concert Allegro
    • Lieb: Concertino Basso
    • McCarty: Sonata
    • Vaughan-Williams: Six Studies in English Folksong
  • From memory, all major scales and arpeggios (2 octaves) and chromatic scale (2 octaves)

  • Select one of the following solos:
    ◦  Capuzzi - Andante and Rondo  
    ◦  Gregson - Concerto, movement 1  
    ◦  Haddad - Suite  
    ◦  Hartley- Suite for Unaccompanied Tuba  
    ◦  Hindemith - Sonata, any two movements  
    ◦  Marcello - Sonata in F Major
