Graduate Brass Audition Repertoire

Brass section

Pre-Screening

Deadline: December 1, 2024.

All graduate programs in brass performance require pre-screening, so your application must be submitted by the Priority deadline of December 1.

Pre-screening materials will be submitted online using Acceptd

 

Trumpet graduate pre-screening
  • Two contrasting solos with piano accompaniment
  • Any etude by Charlier
  • Mahler: Symphony No. 5 (opening solo)
  • Respighi: Pines of Rome (off-stage solo)
  • Stravinsky: "Ballerina's Dance" from Petrouchka
Horn graduate pre-screening
  • First movement of any Mozart concerto, with live piano accompaniment
  • Any Gallay etude
  • Three standard excerpts of diverse styles
  • Additional requirement: Something that represents you as a musician and person (ie. music composition you wrote, an article you wrote for publication, or other media). If you do not yet have any of these, please submit a one-page proposal for something you would like to do.
  • Recordings may be submitted in separate takes
Trombone graduate pre-screening
  • Pre-Screened Recordings should include 2 solo selections (with piano if the piece calls for it), 1 etude, and 3 standard orchestral excerpts.  Requests for suggested repertoire should be directed to jbynum@uga.edu.

  • No editing within a piece, but it is not necessary to record all material in one take.  Video is preferred, but not mandatory.
Euphonium graduate pre-screening
  • Two contrasting solos with piano accompaniment
  • Any complete etude from Rochut: Melodious Etudes for Trombone, Book 2
  • Sousa: Stars and Stripes Forever (no repeats)
  • Schoenberg: Theme and Variations (Variation V; baritone part)
  • Grainger: "Horkstow Grange" from Lincolnshire Posy (beginning to m. 17; baritone part)
Tuba graduate pre-screening
  • Two contrasting solos with piano accompaniment
  • Any complete etude from Rochut: Melodious Etudes for Trombone, Book 2 (down one octave)
  • Wagner: Overture to Die Meistersinger (RN J to RN L)
  • Prokofiev: Symphony No. 5, mvmt. 1 (RN3 to RN6)
  • Berlioz: Hungarian March (RN4 to 4 after RN5)

 

On-Campus Auditions

  • Audition dates: Monday January 13th, 2025 & Saturday January 18th, 2025
  • All auditions will be in-person or via Zoom, based on requested accommodation.
