Undergraduate Woodwinds Auditions

Students with woodwindsFlute 

  • Mozart: Concerto in G Major, K. 313 or Concerto in D Major, K. 314 (first movement only)
  • A contrasting work (or two movements if a multi-movement work is chosen) from the standard solo repertoire
  • Orchestral Excerpt Spirit Dance from Menuet and Spirit Dance from Orpheus by Gluck (click here)
  • Major Scales over 2 octaves and C Major and chromatic scale over 3 octaves. 
  • Sight Reading

Oboe 

  • Slow aria/cantata by J.S. Bach
  • One movement of a sonata or concerto of your choice
  • Fast etude by Ferling/Barret (performance majors only)
  • Scales:
    ◦  Major Scales, minimum of two octaves
    ◦  Chromatic Scale, low Bb to High F

Bassoon 

  • Two contrasting selections from standard repertoire, such as individual movements from sonatas, concertos, etudes, or other solo works. 
  • Each work should be by a different composer and represent different styles, tempos, and technical demands.
  • All major scales and arpeggios 
  • 3-octave Bb chromatic scale

Saxophone ​​​​​​​

  • All 12 major scales and the chromatic scale played full-range. Be prepared to play scales all-slurred as well as in a slur two / tongue two articulation pattern.
  • Two contrasting etudes (one lyrical, one technical) from books such as Feeling, Berbiguier/Mule, J.L. Small, Labanchi, Voxman Selected Studies, or similar.
  • At least two contrasting movements from the classical saxophone repertoire. Suggested works include the Sonatas by Paul Creston and Bernard Heiden, Tableaux de Provence ​​​​​​​by Paule Maurice, and Romance by William Grant Still—or a larger one-movement work, such as the Glazunov Concerto.

  • Two contrasting solos/etudes: 
    ◦  One demonstrating lyrical-expressive capabilities
    ◦  One demonstrating technical skill 
  • Scales:

  • Sight-reading (moderate difficulty)
