World premiere, rare performance highlight UGA Percussion Ensemble concert

The UGA Percussion Ensemble’s spring concert in Ramsey Concert Hall on Wednesday, April 6, at 6 p.m. will go beyond the ensemble’s characteristic high-quality and innovation with performances of a percussion masterwork and a world premiere.

The free concert’s program includes works from Fredrik Andersson, Lynn Glassock, James Romig and Ardean W. Watts, showcasing various configurations of percussionists from the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s percussion area, chaired by Timothy K. Adams Jr.

“We have an exciting program planned,” said Adams, the Mildred Goodrum Heyward Professor in Music at the School of Music. “I think it will be a terrific concert for our audience."

Percussion trio Lineage Percussion will perform the marimba trio, “Burn Green,” written by Larry Baker. The performance will be the world premiere of the composition from Baker, who wrote the piece for Lineage.

Also on the program is Anne LeBaron’s “Rite of the Black Sun,” a work for percussion quartet notorious for its difficulty.

“The quartet is one of the important pieces in our repertoire that is rarely performed because of its complexity,” said Adams.

Under the leadership of co-directors Adams and Kimberly Toscano Adams, the UGA Percussion Ensemble has gained prestige in the collegiate percussion community, performing regularly throughout the Southeast.
