The UGA Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by a special, international guest in its November concert in Hodgson Concert Hall on Thursday, November 10, at 8 p.m.

Lieutenant General Valery Khalilov, former chief conductor and Senior Director of Music of the Military Band Service of the Armed Forces of Russia, will conduct the Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s premier orchestral ensemble as part of an extended visit to the University.

Khalilov is internationally recognized as Russia’s most distinguished military band and orchestra conductor. He holds the title of Honored Artist of Russia and has conducted performances in many countries throughout the world, including Austria, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Korea, Lebanon, Mongolia, Poland, the United States, Finland, France, Switzerland and Sweden.

Khalilov, who is also the chief musical director of the International Military Music Festival at Spasskaya Tower, will lead the orchestra through two works by Tchaikovsky, Piano Concerto No. 1 and Symphony No. 5.

For the piano concerto, the orchestra will be joined by another decorated Russian artist—this one on faculty at the School of Music—Evgeny Rivkin.

Khalilov’s visit to Athens also includes an appearance as guest conductor of the Hodgson Wind Ensemble during their performance in Hodgson Concert Hall on November 15 at 8 p.m.

Tickets to the concert are $12 each or $6 with a UGA student ID and can be purchased at pac.uga.edu or the PAC box office. Those unable to attend can watch the concert live on the Hodgson School’s website: music.uga.edu/streaming.

This concert is presented as part of the University of Georgia’s Spotlight on the Arts festival, celebrating the arts at the University with a two-week schedule of events all across campus. Details can be found on the UGA Arts Council’s website, arts.uga.edu.

The UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music sponsors more than 350 performances each year. To view the performance calendar, subscribe to the weekly email concert listing or learn more about the School of Music, go to music.uga.edu.
