UGA School of Music Jazz Ensemble I first jazz big band to play Hendershot’s

The Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s Jazz Ensemble I trades concert hall for coffee bar when they travel to Hendershot’s Coffee for a performance on Sunday, October 9, at 8:30 p.m.

The concert will be a first for Hendershot’s, which normally hosts much more small-scale shows.

“This will be the first performance of a jazz big band at Hendershot’s,” said David D’Angelo, director of the Jazz Ensemble. “The 18-piece ensemble will be playing arrangements from great composers both past and present.”

The ensemble, the Hodgson School's advanced level big band, is excited about the contrast of venue and band.

“The room will be sure to provide an intimate setting of big band jazz for the audience,” said D’Angelo.

The group is comprised of traditional big band instrumentation: saxophones, trombones, trumpets, and a rhythm section featuring drums, piano and bass. The band performs music of a variety of styles, including swing, be-bop, latin, and contemporary jazz.

“The ensemble has members representing UGA that have auditioned and performed at a variety of musical events around the country, both academically and professionally, such as the annual SEC Symposium All-Star Jazz Ensemble, the Disneyland Collegiate Jazz Ensemble and the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra,” said D’Angelo.
