School of Music student wins UGA Libraries’ Undergraduate Research Award

Brooke Martin, a UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music student, was recently named first place winner for the UGA Libraries’ Undergraduate Research Award in the Senior year category.

Martin, a double major in horn performance and music theory, will be honored at the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities’ Symposium on April 4 and 5 at the Classic Center in Athens, in addition to receiving a cash award.

The selection committee for the award noted that despite a record number of applications, Martin’s stood out as an “exemplar” for the award.

“The judges were impressed with the creativity, tenacity in research, and scholastic sophistication you expressed in your essay,” they wrote in an email to Martin. “We loved the story you told about your research journey and the many resources and people who helped along the way.”

The essay that secured first place for Martin was about the research process behind the creation of an upcoming recital concerning the development and use of American reed organs in the United States and the influence of Stephen Foster’s songs.

Martin will perform in this free-to-attend recital alongside fellow School of Music student Geneva Stonecipher in Edge Recital Hall on Monday, April 4, at 3:30 p.m.
