Concerto coincidence leads to horn students’ Mozart recital

An unusual coincidence in the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s horns area has led to the creation of a unique performance in Edge Recital Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m.

Each first-year student of Dr. Jean Martin-Williams, the School of Music’s professor of horn, will play one movement of Mozart’s four horn concerti.

“Mozart wrote four horn concerti, considered the backbone of our rep,” said Martin-Williams. “The first one has two movements, the rest have three, so a total of eleven movements.”

This is significant because Martin-Williams has exactly that many first-year horn students. A typical year might see her teaching three or four first-year students.

“So, I seized on this “11 coincidence,” and the first-year students will present the four Mozart concerti, with each student playing one movement,” said Martin-Williams.

The performance is free, and all are welcome to attend this rare recital.
