The UGA Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Mark Cedel, will open the 2015-2016 Second Thursday Scholarship Concert Series on Sept. 10.

Athens, GA -- The 2015-2016 Second Thursday Scholarship Concert Series begins on Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. with Mark Cedel and the UGA Symphony Orchestra performing a program featuring "The Planets" by Gustav Holst and Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 100, "Military."

Holst's most popular work, "The Planets" is a seven-movement orchestral suite--each movement named for a planet in the Solar System--that has influenced and been adapted into a vast array of musical styles since its writing in the early 20th century.

Often known as the "Military Symphony," Haydn's Symphony No. 100 comes from his London Symphonies, created between 1791 and 1795. The nickname for the piece comes from the fanfare in the second movement, evoking the sounds of war in the 18th century.

Tickets are $18 standard and $5 with a valid UGA ID and are available at the UGA Performing Arts Center box office by calling 706-542-4400 or ordering online at pac.uga.edu.

The next concert in the series is set for Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m., when internationally renowned pianist Evgeny Rivkin will join Regents Professor of Violin Levon Ambartsumian to perform the sonatas of Johannes Brahms.

Established in 1980, the Second Thursday Scholarship Series offers showcase performances by UGA students and faculty on the second Thursday of each month throughout the academic year. Proceeds from individual ticket sales and season subscriptions help fund yearlong academic scholarships and assistantships for students and present donors the opportunity to sponsor individual students of the music school at several levels of giving.

Subscriptions for the 20152016 Second Thursday Scholarship Series are on sale from the UGA Performing Arts Center box office at 7065424400 or toll free at 8882898497.
