Hugh Hodgson School of Music faculty and graduate students present the latest entry in the 2nd Thursday Scholarship Concert Series on Thursday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall. Tickets for the performance are $18/$5 for students and can be obtained via the UGA Performing Arts Center box office.

The concert, entitled “Chamber Music for Brass, Woodwinds, Stings, & Piano,” will showcase small groups of university musicians in performances of intimate repertoire: an all-brass setting of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Concertino, op. 94, Francis Poulenc’s Sextet for Piano & Winds, and Johannes Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G minor.

“One of the greatest strengths of any school of music is its faculty, and the Hodgson School is no different,” said Dale Monson, director of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. “They define UGA’s stellar reputation."

In addition to brass graduate students, the performance will feature faculty members Angela Jones-Reus (flute), Reid Messich (oboe), D. Ray McClellan (clarinet), Amy Pollard (bassoon), Jean Martin-Williams (horn), Philip Smith (trumpet), Brandon Craswell (trumpet), Joshua Bynum (trombone), David Zerkel (tuba), Michael Heald (violin), Maggie Snyder (viola), David Starkweather (cello), Damon Denton (piano), and Anatoly Sheludyakov (piano).

“Students come from all over the world to study with these musicians on our faculty, and when you hear them performing in our own wonderful concert halls, you quickly understand why,” said Monson. “Chamber music is among the most intimate and expressive of music genres—and here their individual artistry shines brightest."

Established in 1980, the 2nd Thursday Scholarship Series offers showcase performances by UGA students and faculty the second Thursday of each month throughout the academic year. Proceeds from individual ticket sales and season subscriptions help fund year-long academic scholarships and assistantships for students and present donors the opportunity to sponsor individual students of the music school at several levels of giving.

The next concert in the series will be Evgeny Rivkin’s rescheduled February concert, now in Hodgson Hall April 3 at 7:30 p.m., followed by the Hodgson Singers on April 9. Subscriptions to the 2014-2015 Second Thursday Scholarship Series are on sale from the UGA Performing Arts Center box office at pac.uga.edu, by calling 706/542-4400, or toll free at 888/289-8497.
