Graduate Training in Music Therapy

Master of Music in Music Therapy

The Master of Music (M.M.) with an Area of Emphasis in Music Therapy provides in-depth study of the practice of music therapy, including research, clinical applications, and current developments in music therapy theory and practice. Coursework will address the Advanced Competencies in Music Therapy as established by the American Music Therapy Association.  This degree is intended for current board-certified music therapists (MT-BCs). If you are not a board-certified music therapist or eligible to sit for the board examination, please see section on our equivalency program.

The program is comprised of a diverse set of in-person academic and clinical experiences including advanced music therapy practicum placements, supervision of music therapy undergraduate students, development and implementation of research studies, and courses on current trends and issues in the field of music therapy. In addition, students complete coursework in related topics of music theory, music history/ethnomusicology, music studies, and electives outside of music that are selected by the student to further develop their knowledge in an area of their interest. Many of these courses can be selected to fulfill an additional graduate certificate (i.e. Gerontology, Non-Profit Leadership and Management, Substance Use Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Disabilities Studies) offered by the University of Georgia.

Primary career opportunities for graduates of this degree program include the advanced clinical practice of music therapy in a variety of healthcare and educational settings, and teaching music therapy at the undergraduate level. The degree also prepares graduates for future study in music therapy at the doctoral level.
