HHSOM Double Dawgs

The first sections are from the DoubleDawgs powerpoint: https://doubledawgsproposals.uga.edu/Double Dawgs Advisor Info

Student Eligibility

The Double Dawgs program is available for all qualified undergraduate students regardless of admission type (Freshman/Transfer) or credit hours earned. Criteria for acceptance into a Double Dawgs pathway is determined by the department(s) offering the pathway.

The Double Dawgs program requires that students complete both the undergraduate degree and graduate degree in 5 years or less, with the undergraduate degree being completed by the end of the fourth year. For transfer students, the timeframe for completion is determined based on the student’s UGA matriculation date and the number of earned transfer hours. For example, if a transfer student enters UGA with 30 earned hours, they are considered a sophomore and therefore have three years to finish the undergraduate degree.

Usual Timeline

Year 1: Student reviews the available Double Dawgs pathways on the Double Dawgs website - https://doubledawgs.uga.edu/ProgramList

Year 2: Student talks to advisor(s) about the pathway(s) of interest and discusses any courses needed in order to apply to the pathway in year 3

Year 3: Student applies and gains acceptance to their desired pathway (see details below)

Year 4:

  • Student takes graduate-level courses that apply to both the undergraduate and graduate degree
  • In the last semester of their undergraduate degree, student applies to the Graduate School and gains acceptance to the graduate program (MM in Performance or MM in Composition).
  • Student graduates with the bachelor’s degree at the end of year 4
    • If a student chooses not to continue or is not admitted to the graduate school, the student may still use the graduate-level coursework they completed as an undergraduate student toward completion of the bachelor’s degree.

Year 5: Student takes graduate-level courses exclusively and graduates with the master’s degree at the end of year 5.

HHSOM Application and Audition process to the Double Dawg Pathway

In the third year of the undergraduate degree, a student wanting to be accepted to a pathway should first check in with their advisor. Then, they should submit a Double Dawgs application in Athena to express an interest in a Double Dawgs pathway and to formally apply to a Double Dawgs pathway. The Double Dawgs Program Advisor in the HHSOM, Dr. Brandon Craswell (craswell@uga.edu) can let the relevant area’s faculty know about the Double Dawgs pathway application.

Once their Athena application to the Pathway has been approved, the student should go ahead and submit their HHSOM application on Acceptd. The major professor will then help them schedule their audition for the area. It is up to the area and major professor whether a pre-screening round will be required.

The Area Chair will let the Double Dawgs HHSOM Program Advisor (Dr. Craswell), the Graduate Coordinator (Dr. Gertsch) and the HHSOM Graduate Office (musicgrad@uga.edu) know the area’s recommendation regarding admission to the MM, once the area faculty have reviewed the applicant’s application on Acceptd, and heard an audition and/or reviewed any other elements required by the area. The HHSOM Graduate office will submit the department’s recommendation on admission to the UGA Graduate School after the student has applied to the UGA Graduate School, which will happen in the Spring semester of their fourth undergraduate year.
