Spring Admit Students

Spring Admit Information

Each year, there is the possibility that a small number of prospective UGA students, having applied to begin college in fall semester, will be admitted (or 'deferred') to begin their studies the following spring semester. The following information is designed to help spring admit students who have been accepted to both the University of Georgia and the Hugh Hodgson School of Music.

My acceptance states that I am admitted for spring. Is this a mistake? Did I accidentally apply for spring on my application?

No. You were reviewed for admission for the fall term, as indicated on your application, but ultimately offered admission for the following spring semester, which starts in January. Each year the Office of Undergraduate Admissions is able to extend offers of admission for a spring semester start to a limited number of students who would have otherwise been denied for fall, but who were very strong applicants. You were selected for that offer of spring admission.

Is there any way my acceptance can still be considered for summer or fall?

No. Your admission is only valid for the spring semester which begins in January.

Am I considered a transfer student if I begin my college career in the spring?

No. You are considered a first-year student starting in the spring semester, which begins in January.

Can I take courses at another college or university in the fall and have those courses count toward my degree at UGA?

Yes! Many students who start in spring will attend another college or university in the fall in order to make sure they are still on track to graduate with their peers. Other students may choose to use these few months to work, study abroad, or volunteer with an organization.

How will I know that the classes I take at another institution will transfer to UGA?

Before registering for a class at another college or university, refer to our online Transfer Equivalency Tool to determine whether or not you will receive credit for that class at UGA.

Does it matter which college I attend in the fall? Does it matter which classes I take?

No. You may attend any other college or university and are not required to take specific classes, but it is encouraged to make sure, before registering for classes at another college, that those classes will transfer to UGA. You can see a list of transferrable classes using our online Transfer Equivalency Tool. Remember that your college GPA begins with your first enrollment at any college, so treat your fall term seriously if you plan to take classes at another institution.

The Hodgson School of Music academic advisors recommend that if you plan to major in a music at UGA, you should try to take the following courses, if possible:

  • Applied music instruction (for two credit hours)
  • A large ensemble (for one credit hour)
  • Piano or voice* (for one credit hour)
  • Music theory and aural skills (for four credit hours)

*Students who are studying piano as their primary instrument must take voice for four semesters of study. All other music students (instrumental or voice) must take piano for at least four terms of study.

If I attend another college in the fall, will my student loans and/or HOPE scholarship transfer to UGA when I start in the spring?

Yes! As long as you are in good standing at the college you attended in the fall, student loans and the HOPE/Zell Miller scholarships can be applied to UGA for your start in the spring. For more information regarding Financial Aid, please visit their website or contact their office via email.

Will I still be able to live in a residence hall if I start at UGA in spring?

Yes! In fact all first-year students are required to live on campus, including those students who start in January. For more information regarding housing, please visit their website or contact their office via email. Information on how to register for housing for spring will be provided for you in early October.

If I have a friend that will start at UGA in fall, will I be able to request to live in a residence hall room with them when I start in spring?

Yes! You may still make roommate and residence hall requests, even if your intended roommate starts at UGA in the fall and is already assigned to a room with a roommate when you start in the spring. Your intended roommate would have to forfeit their current housing assignment.

When should I register for housing and orientation?

We will release registration information for housing and orientation in early October.

Should I attend a summer orientation session?

No. Summer orientations are designed for those students starting in summer or fall. You will have a specific orientation in January before classes begin. More specific information on registering for spring orientation will be provided for you in early October.

When will I meet with my music advisor and register for classes?

You will meet with your music advisor and register for classes during your spring orientation in January before classes begin. More specific information on registering for spring orientation will be provided for you in early October by the UGA Admissions Office.

If I intend to accept my offer of admission for spring, when should I submit a commitment deposit? If I don’t submit it before the deadline and then decide later that I want to attend UGA in the spring, will I still be accepted?

No. In order to reserve your spot for the spring semester, you must submit your $300 non-refundable, non-transferable commitment deposit by May 1, 2014. If you do not submit your commitment deposit we will assume you have declined your offer of admission to UGA and we will offer your spot to another student. You can pay the deposit through your online Status Check or by working with the Bursar’s Office.

Do I need to take placement tests?

Possibly. The best way to make sure that you do not take unnecessary classes at UGA in the spring is to take placement tests. For students who attend class at another college, we will not know if you will receive credit for those classes until we receive a final official transcript in late December / early January from the college you attended. If we do not receive the transcript AND you have not taken placement tests before your orientation, you will not be able to register for classes. For more information regarding Placement Tests, please visit their website at or contact their office via email.

For students who completed subsequent theory and aural skills college-level coursework at another institution (this excludes AP credit), they will be required to take a Theory Diagnostic Placement Exam. Please contact Dr. Chic Ball for exam details

Are there any scholarships that are offered to students who start in the spring?

Yes and no. Any admitted spring first-year student who applied for admission to UGA before December 15, 2013, was considered for scholarships. If you are to receive any scholarships you would have been notified by late-April 2014. There are no additional academic scholarships available to students in the Spring, but you may apply for need-based aid. For more information regarding Financial Aid, please visit their website or contact their office via email.

As for HHSOM scholarship funding, you will need to inquire specifically with your prospective applied studio instructor to see if finacial assistance is possible.

Is there someone in the Admissions Office that can help me when I have questions about starting in January as a student admitted for spring?

Yes! Please feel free to contact Liz Phillips, Assistant Director of Admissions, at 706-542-8032 or email with any questions regarding spring admission.
