Athens’ storied musical tradition continues with the 2017-2018 Thursday Scholarship Series, the flagship concert series from the Hugh Hodgson School of Music.

The concert series, which continues the tradition of “Music Appreciation Programs” started by Hugh Hodgson in the 1930s, features the finest ensembles, faculty and students from the University of Georgia’s music school each month of the fall and spring semesters. Proceeds from the series are a major funding source for many students’ music scholarships and graduate assistantships.

“The students we teach, the faculty we have, the concerts we host are all extraordinary, and this is due, in no small part, to the support we get from the community,” said Dale Monson, director of the Hodgson School. “We are thrilled to provide that community with the slate of excellent performances we have this year.”

Familiar major ensembles like the UGA Symphony Orchestra (UGASO), Hodgson Wind Ensemble (HWE) and Hodgson Singers each have their own performances in this year’s series, but they will also be a part of several unique performances throughout the year: the UGASO’s Concerto Competition Concert, which features outstanding student soloists; and a rare, combined performance from the Hodgson Singers and HWE.

Other concerts in the series range from traditional, audience-favorites like Professor of Piano Evgeny Rivkin’s solo concert and the UGA Holiday Concerts to adventurous new concerts like a faculty and student wind chamber music showcase and a special concert celebrating women in music.

Season subscriptions will be available for purchase during the second week of July at pac.uga.edu, with individual tickets going on sale at the start of the fall semester. Individual tickets to Thursday Scholarship Series concerts are $20 each or $6 for students and children.
